My child is short, when should I worry?

Is being short always a disease?

When families notice that their child is shorter than their peers, the same question often comes to mind: "Is there a problem with their growth?"

Actually, short stature alone is not an indicator of illness. Some children can be genetically shorter than average even though they are perfectly healthy.

Therefore, the assessment is not based solely on the child's current height.

Why is growth rate important?

It's not just about how many centimeters a child is today, but also how much they've grown from the past to the present .

If a child's height increases steadily over time, the growth process may require a different assessment. Conversely, a significant slowdown in the growth rate of a child who previously followed a certain growth curve may be a cause for investigation.

What factors are considered when evaluating short stature?

Several factors are considered when evaluating a child's height:

  • Current height and weight,

  • Previous height measurements,

  • Growth rate,

  • The heights of the mother and father,

  • The child's overall development,

  • Nutritional status,

  • History of chronic disease,

  • Adolescent development,

  • Bone age and laboratory results, if necessary.

This assessment helps determine whether the short stature is due to the child's natural growth characteristics or another cause that needs to be investigated.

In what situations does evaluation become important?

Especially:

  • If there is a significant slowdown in height growth,

  • If the child deviates from the growth curve they previously followed,

  • If growth is accompanied by other developmental or hormonal findings,

  • If the child's height does not seem to be in line with family characteristics

A pediatric endocrinology evaluation may be necessary.

Why is early assessment important?

Early detection of certain hormonal or health issues that can affect growth can help ensure that the necessary assessment and follow-up process is initiated in a timely manner.

Therefore, instead of waiting a long time with the thought, "They're too young, they'll grow taller later," it's important to assess any noticeable changes in their growth process.
